Frequently Asked Questions

What the heck is a hot dog mile?

Have you heard of a beer mile? Well, it’s a little bit worse than that. 4 hot dogs, 4 quarter-mile laps, hopefully no puking and some beers at the end. And the best part? All of the money after basic race costs is directly donated to a local Detroit Dog Rescue!

Okay, but how does the race actually work?

When the race horn is blown, you will begin by consuming one of your four hot dogs. You must have finished the dog completely and have no hot dog remaining in your mouth before starting a lap. After completing one lap of the race course, you will return to your hot dog station and start on your next dog. This process will be completed 4 times for a total distance of one mile. Your time ends when you cross the finish line after your fourth lap!

Where is the race located?

Eastern Market Brewing Company, 2515 Riopelle St. Detroit, MI 48207

What is the race course?

The course consists of approximately 4 laps of a 1/4 mile in historic Eastern Market with the start/finish on Riopelle in from of Eastern Market Brewing Company. Just like a race track, it’s all left turns!

How does timing work?

Timing details coming soon- our goal is to have chip timing this year!

How does the wave start work?

We’re basically just dividing the race into 3 individual start times with a fourth wave for relay runners to make things easier on both the runners and volunteers. You will line up and start at whatever time you signed up for. All waves are eligible for awards, and overall winners will be assigned among all waves. However, if you think you’re going to run an under 10 minute hot dog mile, consider signing up for our elite wave to run with everyone else who is just as cocky as you.

Are there awards?

Yes, the first overall, plus the first female and first male finisher will receive awards.

Is it a closed course?

Nope. The start in front of EMBC on Riopelle will be closed off, but the remainder of the course is open. Please be aware of your surroundings and watch for cars, pets, children, chicken, tumbleweeds, tumbleweaves, etc.

Are strollers welcome?

Unfortunately due to the limited area around the start/finish chute we are unable to accommodate strollers.

Are Dogs allowed at the race?

We ask that you bring your dogs as spectators, not racers, but we would love to have them! EMBC is a dog-friendly brewery!

What if I have dietary restrictions? Can I still run?

Absolutely! When registering please let us know any dietary restrictions and we will make our very best effort to accommodate.

Can I dip my dog in water?

Yes! Classic strategy of using water is allowed but can also be substituted with a beverage from our host EMBC!

Will there be condiments?

We will be providing basic condiments including mustard and ketchup in bulk form. If any additional condiments are desired you must provide for yourself.

What happens if I can’t finish a dog/throw up?

You’re out! Not being able to consume all 4 dogs, or a reversal of fortune, results in a DQ.

What’s the deal with the beer mugs?

EMBC will graciously be donating $5 beer pours in a Hot Dog Mile Mug. This will increase our donation.

If I don’t purchase swag with my registration will it be available day of?

Maybe? We will have a limited number of beer mugs and t-shirts available for purchase on race day, but once they’re gone they’re gone. The best way to guarantee your race swag is to order with registration.

Can I register the day of the race?

Probably not. We expect the race to sell out. If we do have spots available we may accept same day registration until hot dogs run out- just remember swag is not guaranteed day of and we will not be able to honor dietary restrictions. Race day registration is $25.

What if I want to support the dogs but not run?
